La Clinica del Pueblo
Our History
The clinic began in 2016 by Dr. Judith Alvarez, who through her work with Valley Settlement, discovered that many immigrant women were not receiving any medical care. Lack of access was due to a lack of trust in government funded institutions, language barriers and low incomes. Alvarez, a licensed Doctor in her country of origin, understood the importance of health equity and access. While teaching the first Spanish language Cooking Matters classes, Dr. Alvarez began talking with her students about their primary care and realized she could make a difference.
Judith enlisted the help of Valley Settlement, Dr Lintner and volunteers from Mountain Family Health Center for a Saturday morning clinic once a month. As word of mouth grew, so did demand. In 2020 Dr. Feinsinger, a retired family physician, and Dr. Alvarez joined forces in the Third Street Center, where La Clinica del Pueblo is still located. Through the generosity of two individual families, and Dr. Feinsinger’s volunteering, La Clinica expanded, providing patient hours during the week and two Saturdays a month.
Current Clinic
La Clínica del Pueblo is in an exciting time of growth. With support from the Colorado Health Foundation and generous community donations, the clinic has moved into a newly remodeled space at the Third Street Center. The expanded office now includes two exam rooms, a dedicated behavioral health room, and a space for lab services—allowing us to offer more comprehensive care to our patients.
This growth also includes expanded clinic hours, the continued dedication of Dr. Alvarez, and the addition of Jenny Lang, N.P. With these changes, La Clínica is able to provide more services to more people—especially those who are uninsured or underserved.
In addition to a focus on lifestyle changes to improve chronic health conditions, La Clínica offers bilingual primary care, behavioral health support, and preventive health education. Fees are based on ability to pay, and services are provided free of charge to those who cannot pay. All staff are Spanish-speaking.
Programs like Shop with a Doc and plant-based cooking classes are offered throughout the year to support healthier living.
